“Auschwitz begins wherever someone looks at a slaughterhouse and thinks: they are only animals” ~Theodor W. Adorno. The conditions that pigs, chickens, cows, turkeys and geese live in are absolutely horrifying. It isnt living. It’s existing, barely, in their own filth, crammed up so close to their mates that they will have their beaks cut off off, their horns, etc so they do not hurt each other. Sometimes they do just from going mad from having no space to sit up or turn around. Female pigs lay in gestation crates all day, cant get up move. I recently saw a film taken at Hormel. There was a pig beaten with a cane. She was screaming in pain. Then her baby piglets, dropped on their heads on the cement. Can you imagine this being you? Or your cats or dogs? The majority get zero sunlight or freshair. When it’s time to die, the slaughterhouse workers are told to work so quickly that often they are skinned or plucked still alive as often times, the worker will have not killed them completely. Conditions for the workers as well are pretty horrible. No animal should have to suffer like this. There was a time when meat was a supplement to our diets. When the Indians would kill a deer say, they paused and gave thanks. The majorijty of their diets, as ours should be, are plant and grain based. Get healthy inisde and out! Don’t support anything involving animal suffering for your physical and spiritual health!
It is hard for us humans to connect ourselves to animals when we don’t actually raise them, when they are not members of our family like say our cats and dogs. The fact that someone else does the dirty work for us, aka when you are about to sit down and have a pork chop, makes it easier to just eat and enjoy. Here’s a fact about pigs – they are smarter than dogs and 3 year old children. It is a scientific, proven fact. Now think about what hell these animals are put through just to satisfy our taste buds for brief moments. Can you imagine your own dog, cat, your own companion animals suffering like this? then eating them? Can you imagine doing this to an animal and slaughtering it yourself? I am sure the majority would say, no way! You can make a difference for these intelligent, friendly creatures. Please see this video from the Humane Society: http://www.humanesociety.org/animals/pigs/
Every single year the Canadian government gives the go ahead to club hundreds of thousands of baby har seals. Literally the mother seal will be lying there while a hunter with a nail-studded club slams it over and over again into her baby. The cries of these animals are heartwrenching – and I’m sure you can imagine how painful this would be. Just put yourself in that animals place. Well this year a member of the Canadian Parliament, Ryan Cleary, is saying it may be time for the Canadian seal hunt to end. The majority of Canadians oppose it, it hardly brings in any money, people around the world are crying out for it to stop, and more importantly, it is a gross, inhumane, horribley cruel act against a living creature. Please everyone – speak out – sign an on-line petition to stop the seal hunt. They are everywhere thru PETA, IFAW, WSPA, Humane Society. You love animals – be a voice for them!
It is a horrible, heartbreaking fact that more than half the fur in the U.S. comes from China, where every year millions of cats and dogs are blungeoned, hanged, bled to death and often skinned alive for their fur. I know – cats and dogs. Imagine that happening to your own companion animals. Then add to that all the rabbits, minks, beavers, seals and more suffer similar fates. Seals every years are clubbed to death in Canada. Please, don’t buy fur, don’t buy leather, don’t buy anything made of an animal. The truth is out there . If you find it hard to believe that this really happens, you can search many animal welfare sites like the Humane Society, PETA, and WPSA. Save your money, don’t support the cruelty, and save the life of an innocent, beautiful animal.
A wonderful organization was founded in 1986 to combat the abuses of factory farming and to encourage understanding about farm animals. Please visit Farm Sanctuary.org. Or even better, go visit one of their sanctuaries. I did and it was a moving experience. This is one of the groups that I learned so much from. Thank you Farm Sanctuary!
Times are very tough these days for most financially. It’s always great to support organizations with your wallet, but if you can’t, give them your signature! There are many petitions out there, many important ones that just require literally a few minutes of your time to speak out for helpless animals who have no choice or voice in this world. It’s very easy to go on line to different organizations websites like Humane Society of the United States, Humane Society International, PETA, ASPCA, WSPA – so many that you can find petitions where your support, your name is needed to speak out to help make positive changes for animals. Some examples are the seal hunt/seal clubbing in Canada, cruel and needless lab testing at companies like Nestea (I know who knew?), cats, dogs, pigs, goats used for military /US Dept of defense tests and practices. You would be shocked and saddened to learn what goes on and what is inflicted on helpless animals. It’s hard sometimes to read about these things, but would you rather continue supporting these acts without knowing, or know about it and protect the animals you have compassion for?
The republican primary began recently which got me to thinking about voting…by voting, we express our opinion, show our preference, our support. When we purchase things from food to cars to clothing, anything, we are giving our money to those who make these items. We not only provide them income, but show our support of these products. It took me a lot of years to realize what I was really, truly doing when I purchased factory farm chicken, for example, or a pair of leather gloves. I am supporting whatever it is they make. If I saw someone abusing an animal, like factory farmed animals are, would I just go over and hand them money so I could have some meat? No way!!! If I witnessed the skinning of an animal, weather it rabbit, raccoon, even cat or dog (yes it’s true folks!), would I hand them my money and say “hey make me a coat with that skin.” No way! And really, I don’t think most of us would, because most of us truly love animals and feel compassion for them. Vote with your wallet, folks!
